Class description
ART H 309B: "ISLAMIC ART" -- This course will examine Islamic art created between the seventh and seventeenth centuries from Spain to India. Students will receive an introduction to essential forms and types of Islamic art in order to distinguish the differences between art from the Islamic world and artworks from Western Europe and the Mediterranean. Various themes will be explored that are significant for an in-depth knowledge of Islamic art.

General method of instruction
This course will consist of lectures by the professor on the material treated in the course, in addition to student discussion of reading materials in class.
Recommended preparation
It is essential that the students prepare the reading in advance for discussion in class. It is also preferable that students that have some background in the history or art, the history of the Middle East, or the Islamic religion.
Class assignments and grading
Students will take examinations that include slide identifications, slide comparisons, and essay questions. They will also write a paper on perceptions of Islam in contemporary society. The readings will consist of material from a textbook on Islamic art, as well as scholarly articles on this topic.
Grades are assigned on the basis of performance on examinations, the writing assignment, in addition to attendance and participation in class discussion.
