Class description
ArtH 309 Summer 2008 -- "The Art of Greece" The course will present an introduction to the art and visual culture of Greece through the examination of selected monuments, sites, and works of art from Greece (or, relating to Greece) as witnesses of the political, religious, and cultural history of the time of their production, and as examples of their varied reception.
Student learning goals
Introduce students to major art historical, historical, and cultural monuments and works of art from Greece.
Increase students� ability to analyze and understand how art reflects the history, politics, religion and cultures of the past.
Develop students' understanding of the varied ways the art of Greece has been received, understood and interpreted at different times.
The art and history of Greece reflect the ever-changing interpretation of cultural identity over four millennia, as well as the continuing importance of historical awareness and memory in the past and in our days.

Recommended preparation
ArtH 201,202,203, introductory courses in Classics, and Western European History and Culture would be useful but are not required.
