Topics in ART History

Topics vary.

Class description

This year the course will survey Chinese art and archaeology from Neolithic to Han. Topics include pottery painting, jade carving, bronze casting, and comparative study of early civilizations.

Student learning goals

Acquaint yourself with Chinese art and archaeology.

Understand some fundamental concepts in art history and archaeology.

Get used to comparative studies to understand your own culture.

General method of instruction

Lecture plus in-class group discussion.

Recommended preparation

No background in Chinese history or art history or anthropology is assumed.

Class assignments and grading

Weekly readings, an in-class midterm, and a final exam.

The midterm and final each will count 50%, accumulative.
