Class description
Autumn 2008: PRE-RAPHAELITISM AND REALISM IN THE 19TH CENTURY 5 Credits - Writing This class will study the stylistic, thematic, and other key differences in British, French, and American 19th-century approaches to realism in art. Narrativity and narrative art, representation and "truth", genre paintings and their impact, social realism, and other topics will be explored. Artists such as Millais, Hunt, Rossetti in the UK; Courbet, Millet, and Manet in France; and Eakins and Homer in the US will all be investigated. Among the themes to be examined are contemporary work and workers; class and racial issues; country vs. city life; poverty; domesticity; war; emigration; gendered roles; and death and illness.
