Introduction to the history of architecture across a broad range of cultural contexts.
Class description
The course will give an introduction to the history of architecture from the beginnings of urban settlement to the present day.
Student learning goals
They should understand the main principles of architectural history.
They should appreciate the relationship between historical events, social and political systems and architectural development.
They should understand the architectural response to climate, available materials and technology, and architectural form.
They should be aware of the nature of structural systems and and the manner in which they define space and volume.
They should develop an understanding of the visual principles that give buildings their distinctive characteristics.
Having taken the course they should enjoy architecture more; they should be able to recognize architectural styles and analyze architectural designs. They should want to study architectural further, and should be able to participate in community activities involving planning, design and historic preservation.

None. Just an openness to the subject and a desire to learn.
Class assignments and grading
Two papers, three quizzes, three short essay tests and a final exam.
