Survey of Western Art--Modern

Western art from 1520 to the present.

Class description

Major achievements and historical issues in European and American art from the 16th century to the present. Basic examples and data, introduction to terminology and methods of study.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lecture, TA section meetings, and structured assignments.

Recommended preparation

Basic history of Europe and an interest in the visual arts.

Class assignments and grading

A textbook, Xerox packet of 6 or 8 required readings, review of visual materials, written assignments on readings and on artworks.

Midterm and final exams, written assignments (6 to 8 over the quarter), and participation in class activities with TAs.
