Western art from 1520 to the present.
Class description
This course introduces the major figures, styles and movements in Western art from the High Renaissance to about 1930. It also presents many of the principle issues, techniques and interpretive methods of the discipline of art history. As well as learning to recognize the key "monuments" of European and American art from the period, students will consider how a study of visual products adds to our understanding of past cultures and societies.

General method of instruction
The course is presented in two formats. Large illustrated lectures will anchor the course and introduce students to course materials three days a week. Two days a week students will attend smaller discussion sections designed to expand upon large lectures and present students with the opportunity of engaging with the subjects through discussion of lecture and reading topics.

Evaluation of each student's performance will be based upon two exams (midterm and final), preparation and participation in section discussions, and a 5-7 page paper.
