Survey of Western Art--Modern

Western art from 1520 to the present.

Class description

Winter 2005 This course will cover art from the High Renaissance to the present, focusing on the major artistic movements and styles of Europe and North America, with an emphasis on the political and historical contexts of Western art. Students will learn to recognize styles, themes and issues in art history while developing critical thinking skills. Students will gain an understanding and knowledge of Western art, culture and history through the study of major works of the last 500 years.

The material will be presented through lectures, discussions and readings. Classes will be a combination of lecture and discussion.

Class assignments and grading

There will be short writing assignments, and two exams.

Grading will be based on writing assignments, exams and class participation.
