Topics in Studio Art and Practice

Examines a variety of cutting edge, emerging, and interdisciplinary approached in studio art and practice. Topics vary.

Class description

Art 360: Bits + Tangents 2: Advanced work in Photoshop and Illustrator, with an emphasis on the creation of participatory visual narrative works in either print or web form. In Spring 2007 we will be creating a response piece to Brian Eno’s 77 million paintings http://www.77millionpaintings.com.

Student learning goals

self-expression

digital fluency in photoshop and illustrator

familiarity with web-based artworks and creation thereof

exposure to history of conceptual art and music

General method of instruction

Studio sessions will consist of lectures in digital media and technique, with exercises assigned that build into the creation of a visual artwork that responds to the work of Brian Eno.

Recommended preparation

Students should be fearless about working with digital media. No previous classroom experience with Photoshop or Illustrator is necessary, but familiarity with applications will be helpful.

Class assignments and grading

Projects will build in complexity over the quarter, starting with basic web coding and creation of drawings, building into creation of digital paintings and time-based works.

Grading is based upon participation, timeliness of project completion and overall effort.
