Class description

Art 360: Bits + Tangents 2: Advanced work in Photoshop and Illustrator, with an emphasis on the creation of digitally based visual narrative works. In Spring 2009 we will be looking at artists studying and referencing other artists in contemporary practice.

Student learning goals

self-expression

digital fluency in photoshop and illustrator

creation of new work based on an artistic precedent

exposure to history of conceptual art and contemporary practice

General method of instruction

Studio sessions will be a mixture of lecture, discussion and lab sessions. Short exercises weekly will teach technical aspects of a range of digital media.

Recommended preparation

Students should be interested in making their own work with relatively few constraints. As a 300 level course, students are expected to work independently and bring their own aesthetic interests and goals into their work.

Class assignments and grading

Projects will build in complexity over the quarter, starting with research and presentation of an artist, then into the study of artists' work, and then completion of an artwork that follows on the study.

Grading is based upon participation, timeliness of project completion and overall effort.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
