New Materials and Processes

Exploration of the process through which artists discover and translate ideas, feelings, and concerns into images or objects. Introduction of new ways of thinking, new materials and processes in the investigation of a variety of sculpture methods and approaches.

Class description

The class will offer "food for thought". Emphasis will be on developing new notions of sculptural processes, translating personal, social and political experience into visual meaning. The class will focus on ideas circulating in contemporary sculpture and explore how they manifest in contemporary object-based work, including performative art, activism, sculpture, installation, and photography.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Seminar style group discussions and critiques. Slides and readings will survey contemporary influences sculpture. Demonstrations of new techniques.

Recommended preparation

Prerquisites and an open mind

Class assignments and grading

Students are expected to develop solutions to conceptual-based assignments. Artforms and fabrication methods will vary.

Grades will be awarded according to the effort invested in fulfilling assignments.
