Alternative Approaches to Art and Design

Presentation of process through which artists discover and translate ideas, feelings, and concerns into images or objects. Use of a wide variety of methods and approaches, from traditional to technological, to promote visual expression. Discussion and critiques leading toward better understanding the creative process.

Class description

BITS AND TANGENTS

DESCRIPTION | This course, Bits & Tangents, will provide an introduction to digital imaging environments through the vocabulary of painting, drawing, and two dimensional visual thinking. Imaging softwares including Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop will be used, and various output methods will be experimented with. Previous experience with drawing and digital media is helpful but not required.

understanding and working through artistic processes

working with 2D visual relationships in form and content

creative thinking

building confidence and ability in the use of digital imaging software

General method of instruction

Lab sections in general use computer lab and studio sessions for critiques

Recommended preparation

An open mind and a willingness to experiment.

Class assignments and grading

A series of short exercises that become gradually more complex towards the end of the quarter.

Grades are assigned based on: + completion of all course projects + participation + effort
