ARCH 503
Seattle Campus

Architectural Design Studio Options

Advanced architectural studios in general architectural design, in special projects examining particular architectural determinants, and in architectural research. Focus and format vary with instructor. Prerequisite: ARCH 502.

Class description

In this studio, students will develop sustainable design alternatives for the International Leadership Academy of Ethiopia (ILAE) using a program that architecture and education students developed in collaboration with a Seattle-based school planning team. ILAE will serve highly gifted teens, including subsidized students from the rural areas, and will be located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city and largest metropolis. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world and the third-most populous nation in Africa. The school planners hope to begin site preparation in January 2008. The program specifies a 135,000-square-foot facility situated on a 13- to 15-acre site in a suburban area about 10 minutes drive from the downtown. It will have (1) an educational facility with classrooms, science laboratories, visual and performing arts studios, along with staff support space, a theater, dining hall, library, convenience store, gymnasium, fitness center, and athletic fields; (2) a dormitory for the subsidized students and live-in staff; and (3) guest housing for visiting faculty. The campus will provide a model of sustainable planning and design in a country where deforestation is a major concern.

Student learning goals

Be able to apply theories of cognitive and social development to site and architectural design

Be apple an understanding of culture and ecology to site and architectural design

General method of instruction

Students will work in teams to develop three or four distinct site/school design strategies, and then individual students will create design concepts for each of those strategies. Students will have three reviews, one to discuss the design strategies, one to discuss preliminary design concepts, and a third to present their final projects for critical review. These reviews will be attended by representatives of the planning group and other design professionals. High quality presentation materials will be expected and may be posted on a website.

Recommended preparation

Arch 502 Also review posters containing programming concepts, which are posted in Gould Court

Class assignments and grading

Students will complete four assignments as follows:

For Teamwork: 1. Background Research 2. Concept Design for the Site

For Individual Work: 3. Concept Design for One Facility on the Site 4. Design Development for One Facility

The course is graded pass/fail. Students receive written evaluations at the end of each assignment. They also receive a numerical evaluation at the end of the quarter on a scale of 1 to 5, with 3 indicating student performance at approximately the faculty's expectation for this studio. Higher evaluations (4 and 5) indicate areas of strength and lower ones (1 and 2) indicate areas where additional effort is warranted. This evaluation addresses the quality of individual work and working methods, and the student’s evident contribution to group work.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
