Delineation and analysis of a specific problem or related problems in archaeology focusing on developing research and scholarly communication skills.
The class will focus on the methods and approaches to ethnoarchaeological research across the world. How can you use this subfield of archaeology to better understand how sites are formed and what does it mean to use analogies from other areas. Readings from Binford, Hodder, Gould, Kramer, Cribb, and others will be required.
While ethnoarchaeological approaches have become more accepted what are the pro's and con's to using this field in interpreting sites from the past? Can we truly ever have a better understanding of our past through our present? The class will also do hands on research to interpret how objects were and are used by creating them themselves. Hope you are not afraid of having to make an object from a culture of your choice. This will be a challenge but I look forward to learning from this class too.

Understanding how Ethnoarchaeology has been and is used today.
Looking at site formation processes from across the world based on ethnoarchaeological and past historical studies.
Setting up and practicing how to conduct an ethnoarchaeological survey.
Learn about living cultures across the world and how their traditions impact the formation of sites.
How to create an object from a culture of their choice and discuss how it was used
General method of instruction
Lectures, films, hands on surveys, making an object, and discussions.
Have an interest in archaeology and a willingness to understand how sites may have been formed in the past.
Class assignments and grading
Grading will be based on participation in discussions over the readings and written reviews, as well as creating an object from a culture of their choice as part of the final grade.
