World Music

World music traditions taught by visiting native artists. Consult ethnomusicology staff for current offerings. Intended for undergraduate majors. Audition required. Credit/no credit only.

Class description

Introduction to two traditional instruments of China known as the qin and pipa. Students will learn to play simple selections on on either the qin (7-string zither) or pipa (4-string lute). Practice outside of class is required.

General method of instruction

Private lessons, one hour per week. Instruments of instruction: Chinese zither (qin) and lute (pipa). Students who register for three credits must also attend a weekly group session.
