World Music

World music traditions taught by visiting native artists. Consult ethnomusicology staff for current offerings. Intended for undergraduate majors. Audition required. Credit/no credit only.

Class description

Students can expect to learn the southern Philippine gong and drum tradition practiced among the Magindanaon and Maranao people. This is primarily a hands-on learning of the instruments of the Kulintang ensemble, but knowledge of the culture will also be discussed and emphasized.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

The method of instruction is the traditional aural and oral learning process. Students are expected to learn the music based on memory and imitation of patterns as demonstrated and dictated by the instructor. Students can devise methods to aid in memorization if needed; like for example, writing the music down or recording it during lessons.

Recommended preparation

Prior musical knowledge is not expected from students wishing to take this class. All that is necessary is a sincere interest on learning the new tradition and music.

Class assignments and grading

Students are expected to practice the patterns learned in the class in their own convenience. The studio is available for practice whenever classes are not held there.

Class participation and attendance are the large basis for receiving credit in this class. A final assessment is held at the end of the quarter in which students are expected to play a piece or two. To receive credit, an equivalent grade of 3.0 should be obtained.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
