Upper level survey of English history from the Norman conquest until 1485. Emphasis on political, social, and economic history, with special attention to the peculiarities of English development as these had emerged by 1485.
Class description
The official description is accurate. After a brief discussion of the late Anglo-Saxon period, our focus will be on political, social, and cultural developments in the period from 1066 until 1485, with special attention to issues of "Englishness" and nationalism.
Student learning goals
Students will know a basic narrative of English political, social, and economic development up to 1485.
Students will understand some of the reasons why England developed in the peculiar way it did during this period (peculiar by comparison to other western European countries during the same time period).
Students will be able to evaluate the similarities and differences between between medieval English nationalism and European nationalisms in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Recommended preparation
HIST 112, HSTAM 276, or a 300-level medieval European history class.
Class assignments and grading
Two papers and an essay-style final examination; reading assignments in primary and secondary sources will average about 200 pages per week, but some weeks may be heavier than this.
Two papers: one will be weighted at approximately 25%, the other at 35%. Final exam will count 40%. I reserve the right to award extra credit to students whose participation in class discussions has been exemplary.
