Provides potential managers with a basic knowledge of financial and managerial accounting. Focuses on the use, not the preparation, of accounting information. Examples presented for a variety of for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
Class description
Students will learn the basics of both financial accounting (financial reports to the public) and management accounting (the use of information by managers within an organizaton).

General method of instruction
The class will be discussion oriented, with discussions generally based on cases. Cases will include both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
Recommended preparation
No background in accounting is required. Some familiarity with economics and with organizations and the decisions they make is helpful, but not essential.
Class assignments and grading
Assignments include preparation of cases and some shorter problems. A textbook is used, but most of the cases are not from the textbook.
Grades are based on midterm and final examinations and on class preparation and participation.
