This project-based class will provide an overview of the foundations of modern day search engines. We will discuss Analyzing, indexing, representing, storing, searching, retrieving, processing and presenting information and documents using fully automatic systems. In the class, students will become familiar with classical information retrieval (IR) models, such as the vector space and probabilistic models, their implementation using inverted indices, thesauri, and other utilities, search interfaces, and their evaluation. Through the class, we will build a search engine and become familiar with available IR packages, such as Lucene. The class will also introduce multimedia IR, content-based image retrieval, and social search.
