Class description

This is the 3rd quarter of the beginning Spanish course. Students who enroll in this class must have completed Spanish 102 or have successfully passed the placement test. The emphasis in this class will be to continue building vocabulary, expanding listening comprehension and speaking ability, and continue learning grammar through context. We will be using the same textbook and accompanying DVD that was used for Spanish 101 and 102.

Student learning goals

Student will be able to: Use Spanish to interact with the instructor and other students during class.

Carry on a short conversation (2-6 minutes) about any of the topics presented in Spanish 103.

Understand brief conversations (2-6 minutes), with some repetition, about familiar topics from Spanish 103.

Read brief texts (1-2 pages) about familiar topics from Spanish 103.

Write brief compositions (1-2 pages) about familiar topics from Spanish 103 with help of a dictionary

Use the vocabulary and verb forms covered in chapters 11-15 of the text "GENTE"

General method of instruction

Lectures, group activities, role-playing, interactive multimedia, etc.

Recommended preparation

The prerequisite for this class is the successful completion of Spanish 102 or successfully passing the placement test. Students in this class should prepare for each class by completing the assigned homework and previewing all of the textbook pages and vocabulary that will be covered in the following class. Active participation, daily preparation, and a positive attitude will be factors influencing your final grade. MOTIVATION is the most important element in successful language acquisition.

Class assignments and grading

Students are required to complete the assigned homework in order to prepare for the following class. Homework will include assignments from the textbook, written assignments, and the lab manual exercises that can be completed using the DVD that is supplied with your textbook. We will have 5 chapter exams. These will include oral comprehension sections. Any information that is presented or surfaces durig class is fair game for these tests. This includes personal information about your classmate so it is important to pay attention to everything that happens during the class.
