Issues in Health Policy

Examines relevant current issues in the changing arena of health policy including managed care, public health and safety, and the ethical dimensions of medical research and practice.

Class description

This course will provide a introduction to health policy and will examine the organization of health care systems within the United States. Several key topics will include private insurance, HMOs, medicare, medicaid, and national health care systems. This course will compare and contrast the U.S. healthcare system with national based systems in Canada, the UK, and Taiwan.

Student learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of the comlexity of the U.S. health care system.

Students will be able to define, compare, and contrast sub-components of the U.S. health care system.

Students will be able to discuss barriers to instituting a national healthcare policy within the U.S.
