Using a research project from another course students refine writing skills and expand skills in accessing, identifying, and critically evaluating information. Must be concurrently enrolled in another IAS course.
Class description
Getting started on a research project can be intimidating. This course will reduce your anxiety by breaking down the research and writing process into manageable pieces. We will focus on developing a researchable topic, using library databases and the Web to find relevant sources, and integrating these into a well-organized presentation.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
The course is conducted through lecture, small and large group discussions, small group and individual hands-on activities and homework assignments.
Recommended preparation
Students must be concurrently enrolled in an IAS course that requires a research project.
Class assignments and grading
All assignments are designed to contribute to completion of the research project assigned in the companion IAS course.
The course is 2-credits and is graded on a credit/no credit basis. Fifty percent of the grade will be earned by maintaining a research journal for work conducted in and out of class (and which will be reviewed by the course instructors at each meeting); the other fifty percent of the grade will be based on classroom participation and group work.
