Advanced Arts Workshop

Advanced levels of art making which extend artistic proficiencies and knowledge. Arts may include visual , written, or performance arts, or a combination of these.

Class description

This course is designed to provide an in-depth investigation of the links between Laban Movement Analysis and modern dance technique. Class will be divided into three key sections: movement exploration, high intermediate/advanced modern dance technique, and dance composition. While the primary focus is hands-on engagement of the dance material, some sessions will involve a study of related contemporary examples through reading, film, and live performance.

Student learning goals

1. To demonstrate skill in applying Laban Movement Analysis to ones dance training,

2. To demonstrate increased competency in executing complex dance sequences,especially in the area of partnering,

3. To demonstrate increased skill in movement exploration and composition,

4. To contextualize further dance within a historical and international frame, including seminal figures and important socio-historical moments,

General method of instruction

Studio class in modern dance

Recommended preparation

Intermediate level dance, training in improvisation.

Instructor permission required.

Class assignments and grading

Participation, reading, three movement quizzes, one short concept paper, and final presentation

Emphasis is on participation.
