Advanced levels of art making which extend artistic proficiencies and knowledge. Arts may include visual , written, or performance arts, or a combination of these.
Class description
This workshop will provide a space to explore and create various forms of non-fictional work, from print-essay, experimental journalism, and conceptual prose to various new media modes such as the radio feature, video essay, and other electronic forms. While primarily geared to the production of a finished work, we will also be reading and screening various instances from contemporary and historical creative non-fiction, including the works of Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, W. G. Sebald, Susan Orlean, Roland Barthes, Nicholson Baker, Richard Kostelanetz, The Kitchen Sisters, Walid Ra'ad, Sadie Benning, Jena Osman, Joe Brainard, Charles Olson, and others (this list is subject to change.)
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Since this is an advanced arts workshop, students will be expected to generate a substantial final project and be working towards that throughout the semester. While it is possible to have a purely written final projects, students will be introduced to, and must be comfortable with, media technologies.
Recommended preparation
It is highly suggested that students have taken at least one creative writing class, and/or have confidence in their writing ability. It is also highly suggested that students have taken at least one media-oriented class, or that they enroll in the concurrent 200-level media techniques course, taught by Jentery Sayers.
Class assignments and grading
At least 50% of the class grade will be determined by the art you produce. Other assignments may include written responses for readings and class presentations. Everyone is expected to participate in class discussions.
