Portfolio and Career Development

Explores connections between academic and career portfolio development. Students assemble, critically reflect on, discuss, and present their work in these two contexts. Prerequisite: BIS 300.

Class description

This course has been designed to support students in cultivating their capacities for reflection and building their abilities at portfolio-based learning. Strategies will include prewriting, dialectical notebooks, reading-response journals, triple-entry incident journals, postwriting, learning narratives, substantive revision, self-assessment, portfolio construction, and spoken presentation.

Student learning goals

Class members will hone their abilities to reflect on their learning in the program to date.

Students will develop their capacity for self-directed education and life-long learning by setting goals for future coursework.

Participants will enhance their ability to articulate their educational accomplishments and insights to multiple audiences.

General method of instruction

This class will operate on a seminar model, featuring discussion, collaboration, and hands-on activities.

Recommended preparation

Because BIS 399 relates closely to the IAS portfolio, the course is restricted to IAS students. Successful completion of BIS 300 is a prerequisite for this course. This course should be completed prior to enrollment in BIS 490 or BIS 499.

Assignments will include a variety of forms of reflective practice, including both spoken and written forms.
