Arts Workshop

Explores how art is made in specified areas of inquiry, genre, or media. Arts may include visual, written, or performance arts, or a combination of these.

Class description

This class will be a production workshop with a focus on sound and radio. Students will be exposed to a variety of types of sound art practices, which may include radio documentary, soundscaping, installation art, transmission art, electronic music, and film sound design. We will also listen to important instances of sound art, and discuss the history and theory of this new genre of media art.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Assignments will be geared towards creatively using basic sound production technologies in both individual and group projects. In order to create a space of common inquiry, we will read various materials from art history, literature, and sociology, while screening pertinent media works.

Recommended preparation

No preparation required, although it will be helpful to have a familiarity and comfort with computers, especially Macintosh.

Class assignments and grading

At least 50% of the class grade will be determined by the art you produce. Other assignments may include written responses for readings and class presentations. Everyone is expected to participate in class discussions.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
