AUTUMN 2007 - BIS 293, Special Topics: Survey of Western Music

Course Objectives: This course is an introduction to the Western art music tradition and is designed to touch on representative works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras of music history. In addition to a survey of representative works, this course will provide some of the basic tools for discussion of, critical thought about, and appreciation of this tradition.

Materials: 1. Roger Kamien, Music: An Appreciation, 6th Brief Edition (Required) 2. Multimedia Companion CD-ROM 5.0 (Packaged with textbook) 3. 4 CD set to accompany Music: An Appreciation, 6th Brief Edition (Required)

Each week, lectures will cover the various topics listed on the syllabus and will include discussion and listening to music—including listening to some recordings that will supplement those included in the Kamien textbook.
