Science Methods and Practice

Overview of the scientific method, emphasizing the development of testable hypotheses, scientific writing and analysis.

Class description

This course will focus on developing a solid understanding of the scientific method in theory and practice. Specific goals: 1) Develop an understanding of how the scientific method is applied in a variety of organizations; 2) Learn how to interpret scientific literature and conduct a literature review; 3) Learn how to use and interpret data with basic statistics; 4) Understand the peer-review process; 5) Develop a focused research proposal and defend this proposal in both written and oral formats.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures, problem sets, group projects, review of scientific papers and propoals.

Recommended preparation

Min 2 quarter sequence in college level science. E.g. Chem 142 and 152 OR Bio 211/212. Other 2 quarter sequences are acceptable.

Class assignments and grading

Statistics problem sets, group projects, scientific literature review, review of scientific papers and proposals.

Problem sets, exams, group projects, oral presentations, etc.
