Topics in Education and Popular Culture

Examines education in relation to specific elements of popular culture in order to deepen understanding of the connections and tensions within society. Explores how popular culture is used to enhance the education experience. Topics include popular forms of art, media, literature, or theatre.

Class description

"Taking Teachers to the Movies: Fictional Representations of Educators in Film"

Description: From "To Sir, With Love," to "Stand and Deliver" to "Dangerous Minds," teachers have been a recurring subject of mainstream movies for decades. In this course we will examine these films, as well as others, in an effort to develop critical analyses of how such movies portray teachers and the profession of teaching. The lenses of race, class, and gender will figure prominently throughout our analyses.

General method of instruction

Film watching, large and small group discussion, in-class and out-of-class writing, in-class and out-of-class reading.

Recommended preparation

Class assignments and grading

A series of reading/film responses and a final paper.
