Class description
BCUSP 187 (Literary Analysis) “ENCOUNTERS� This course explores the them of the individual self in its relationships (to other people, the natural world, and the big mysteries of love and death). Students will be introduced to a range of critical approaches to appreciating and understanding literature (primarily, we’ll take a “cultural studies� approach); participants will also learn about some of the techniques in the writer’s “toolkit.� Texts will include short fiction and poems from a range of literary “styles� and “periods,� but with a focus on American literature. Students will be required to keep a reading journal, write 2 short (~3-page) papers, and take a midterm and a final exam.
