Energy, enthalpy and thermochemistry, spontaneity, entropy and free energy, electrochemistry, quantum mechanics and atomic theory, general concepts of bonding. Includes laboratory. Prerequisite: 1.7 in B CUSP 142.
Class description
This is the second quarter of the General Chemistry sequence. The class will cover thermodynamics, electrochemistry, atomic theory and chemical bonding. The class consists of three lectures per week plus a 3 hour lab.
Student learning goals
Understand the laws of thermodynamics.
Understand energy in chemical reactions.
Understand atomic theory and the nature of chemical bonds.
General method of instruction
Lectures, labs, problem sets.
Recommended preparation
Chem 142 (BCUS 142) with a grade of 1.7 or better.
Class assignments and grading
Grading is based on weekly homework, several hour exams and a final.
