Special Topics in First-Year Learning

Various topics designed to respond to curricular interests and needs for first-year students. Offered: AWSp.

Class description

This course provides students with active learning strategies and exploration of university resources to help them adjust and transition to living and studying in the USA, both academically and personally. This course helps cultivate a sense of belongingness, encourages engagement in curricular and co-curricular resources and services, addresses how to function successfully in the context of American university culture, and explains the expectations of the UW Bothell.

Student learning goals

Identify campus resources and apply skills for building meaningful relationships with peers, faculty, and staff.

Learn the purpose and value of academic integrity, understand the philosophy and function of the US education system, and discover effective written and oral communication skills valued by the University.

Understand how their backgrounds and experiences impact their values and assumptions, and how they contribute to the overall diversity of perspectives, viewpoints, and culture of our campus.

General method of instruction

Seminar style class with lecture, guest speakers, site visits, and interaction with the students.

Recommended preparation

Class assignments and grading

Participation, reflection papers, participation in campus activities, and a presentation.

This is a pass/no pass class.
