Explores applications of formulae, computational skills, and interpreting certain quantities. Reviews study techniques to enhance course comprehension, and the pros and cons of the use of calculators in a math class. Credit/no credit. Co-requisite: either B CUSP 122 or B CUSP 123. Offered: AWSp.
Class description
This course is supplemental to BCUSP 123 and prepares students for success in college-level math classes. This course focuses on strengthening computational skills and exploring learning strategies for use in mathematics and other technical disciplines.
Student learning goals
Solve algebraic problems.
Present a solution to a mathematical problem in a logical and systematic way.
Identify and implement effective techniques for learning mathematics and other technical disciplines.
Apply mathematical ideas to new problems.
Read technical material, identify key points, and articulate questions to deepen understanding.
General method of instruction
Class time will be spent working independently to improve computational skills, in groups on a project, and in interactive workshops.
Recommended preparation
Students must be registered in BCUSP 123 to take this support class.
Class assignments and grading
There are two types of assignments in this course: ALEKS and a group project. ALEKS is an online, self-paced program, and we'll be working in the Prep for Calculus module (subscription required, cost is ~$30-40). The group project will include topics related to those covered in 123 and may require outside sources and use of technology.
Your learning will be assessed through ALEKS, in-class activities, and a group project. You will receive frequent, informal feedback in class and written feedback on projects.
