Class description
“Book Clubs and Social Networks” This course considers how and why people come together to talk about books, and how these social networks might shape the ways we read when we are alone. Together we’ll investigate a number of reading communities on- and off-campus, including area book clubs, local book stores, Oprah’s Book Club, university-sponsored Summer Reading programs, online forums, and classroom book discussions. In addition to forming our own smaller book clubs in class, we will all read Nancy Rawles’ novel My Jim along with the “Seattle Reads” program sponsored by the Seattle Public Library and the Washington Center for the Book. For more information about Seattle Reads, visit http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=audience_current_seattlereads .
