Class description
We live in a world driven by consumerism and (over)consumption. At the same time, we typically know very little about where consumer goods come from, and even less about what happens after we finish using them. In this class, we will explore theories of consumption, consumerism, and taste; engage with films, texts, and lectures on sustainable, local production and waste management; examine influential advertising campaigns; and become experts in the life history of a luxury good of your choosing, from origins to discard. In small groups, you will present your findings in two multimedia productions: an image-based presentation and an original television commercial. You will also learn effective public speaking strategies through a series of in-class exercises and presentations. Throughout the quarter, you will chart your mastery of UWB learning goals and personal history of the first year of college as you curate your CUSP portfolio.
