Discovery Core III: The Portfolio and Experiential Learning in Individuals and Society

Evaluates progress at the conclusion of the first year through the construction of a portfolio and offers an experiential learning opportunity, either on- or off-campus. Prerequisite: either B CUSP 115, B CUSP 116, or B CUSP 117; may not be repeated. Offered: Sp.

Class description

This course has two elements: 1) the CUSP first-year learning portfolio and 2) a service-learning component. The latter is designed for students to examine the U.S. public education system and their responsibility for shaping that system through reflection on their own experience in K-12, their college experience, their work with 5th and 6th graders at Woodin Elementary School and readings and discussion. Through our work at Woodin as a community-based project, we will also consider how we can collaborate with community partners, locally, nationally and globally, to identify and address needs not being fully met by existing structures and policies. At Woodin, students in this class will serve as team leaders for 5th and 6th graders developing models for a settlement of 100 earthlings on Mars. The curriculum will be provided so that CUSP students can focus on helping the Woodin students collaborate, plan and design.
