Class description

Virtual Worlds Today online worlds are an ever-growing presence in our lives and have entered mainstream culture reshaping society and creating a cultural phenomenon bringing the Internet to the forefront of people's daily experience. This class will explore the history and core concepts of multi-player games including game worlds, text-based MUDS, tabletop role-playing, and MMOGs. Topics include online behaviors, game design, social dynamics and collaboration in virtual worlds, economic models, motivations and psychology of gamers, identity, and cross-cultural interactions. Primary focus will be online games (e.g., WoW, Aoin, Mabinogi, Free Realms, D&D Online) along with virtual worlds such as Second Life and Perfect World. We will also look at other types of virtual worlds being developed today for entertainment, education, and work.

Students will work together in teams to conceptualize, develop and refine a multi-player game design. Willingness to play a variety of games both in and outside of class in-group gaming sessions.

Classes will be comprised of lectures, guest speakers, case studies, in class exercises, and group game play.
