How do nonprofit enterprises cultivate, secure and sustain funding to advance their missions and work? What is the philanthropic environment for culture and policy institutions and movements? What is the appropriate role of grants (versus other revenue types) in a sustainable program strategy? What are the steps in an effective grant seeking process and who needs to be involved? This course orients students to the larger nonprofit sector landscape, then gives them the tools to engage the grant-making sector with confidence through effective research, writing, managing for outcomes, and relationship management.
Student learning goals
Grant Writing & Grantsmanship: Nonprofit Funding Streams and Strategies is a two-credit skill-building course intended to advance the knowledge base of students in Cultural Studies and Policy Studies. Learning objectives include:
Knowledge of and familiarity with the grant making landscape of the nonprofit sector
Formulation of a credible “case for support” for your program
The means by which funding is sought and secured and the nuts and bolts of the grant making and grant seeking processes
Professional ethics and “best practices” of seeking funding within a community context
General method of instruction
Course Expectations 1. Attend and actively participate in all classes. University of Washington requirements for attendance will be observed. No exceptions may be made by the instructor. 2. Complete reading assignments prior to each class. 3. Complete two written assignments. There IS a textbook required for this class -- It has been ordered through the UWB system. It is called "Getting Funded: The Complete Guide to Writing Grant Proposals" by Susan Howlettt & Renee Bourque, 5th Edition 2011
No advance preparation is necessary. The course will draw on students' experiences, if any, in the nonprofit and government sectors, in particular experiences related to program development, project management, budgeting, and evaluation.

Required Text: Getting Funded: The Complete Guide to Writing Grant Proposals, by Susan Howlett & Renee Bourque (5th Edition, 2011). Text was ordered for class via UWB book store. Or it can be purchased via Amazon.com.
Any additional readings will be provided in electronic format (PDF) via email from the instructor.
The instructor will assign two writing projects including a) A draft "Case for Support" and b) a "Letter of Interest," both which will be presented for peer in-class review and instructor feedback.
Grading for the course will be based on quality of participation both during the class and in written assignments. Specific expectations related to written assignments will be distributed in class.
