Examines how entrepreneurship is at the heart of our economic system. Discusses how new enterprises are created within existing organizations and independently of existing organizations. Explores the process of identifying a business opportunity and creating a business plan that describes how the new enterprise will exploit that opportunity.
Class description
To create, as a member of a team, a business plan for a real business, submitting a written business plan and presenting a 15 minute "pitch" describing that business.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Socratic method of questions and answers. Class critiques of all aspects of each plan. Facilitation of class in discussions. Guest speakers most classes.
Recommended preparation
Review the textbook for general information and format of a written business plan. Read periodicals and follow news reports regarding trends, economics, futurist reports and general information on various types of businesses and what existing businesses could be improved or what new possibilites exist for viable businesses.
Class assignments and grading
The teams will do extensive research and writing of the business plan with The final version of the business plan is due the second to last class of the month. The last class will be presentations of those business plans to the class and/or venture capitalist and investment bankers. The class will vote whether to invite guests.
