4.1 Continuing the Conversation

Many of the faculty hold strong opinions on the topics addressed by our Committee and were glad to have the opportunity to share them. Most faculty have yet to express themselves, and some of those who did may have more to say in response to the recommendations presented in this report. Hence, the Committee believes that the conversation on faculty responsibilities and rewards topics was timely and that it should continue.

The way in which faculty responsibilities and rewards are dealt with has implications, not only for individual faculty members, but for the teaching and research programs of the departments in which they have their appointments. Hence it is important that these issues be discussed and debated at the department and college levels and in the Faculty Senate. They are of sufficient importance to the future of the University to warrant expanded involvement of faculty in the governance of the University.

Recommendation 1: The University-wide conversation on faculty responsibilities and rewards topics should continue and be expanded to the departmental level, with a view toward taking action on the principal recommendations identified in the final section of this report during the forthcoming academic year.
