Classroom Support Services, a department of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at the University of Washington, employs approximately 50 hourly workers on a quarter-to-quarter basis. We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to join our team. Below, you will find descriptions of our various hourly employment positions. ApplicationMedia Services is the unit which provides comprehensive audio/visual support and services to faculty, staff and students. This unit aims to improve the classroom experience and student learning outcomes by utilizing emerging classroom technologies. Media Services is also responsible for providing knowledgeable Technical Assistants to assist faculty with media requests for their classes.
- Technical Assistants Technical Assistants are a vital component of this unit. Working primarily with faculty members, Technical Assistants are trained to use various audio/visual components. An in-depth knowledge or background in a technical field is not required but is certainly an asset. Advancement is possible to one of the following: Event Assistant or Preventative Maintenance Assistant. An Event Assistant is then eligible to become a Senior Event Assistant or Equipment Assistant.
- Media Office Assistants field requests for audio/visual equipment and services from both the University community and off-campus clients. Multi-line telephone, computer database, and data entry skills are required for this position. Accuracy, attention to detail, as well as excellent communication and customer service skills are also required qualities. Advancement to Media Office Assistant II is possible from this position. Media Office Assistants may also transfer to one of the following: Accounting or STF Assistant.
- Preventive Maintenance Assistants are independent workers who maintain the audio/visual equipment installed in classrooms all over the University of Washington campus. Evening and weekend availability is desired for this position.
Event Services is the unit which is responsible for receiving room reservation requests for special events which take place during evenings and weekends in Kane, Mary Gates, and Johnson Halls.
- Event Office Assistants field reservation requests and facilitate many aspects of the event coordination process. Assistants interact daily with University faculty, staff, and students as well as off-campus clients. Candidates for this position should have an amiable temperament, excellent customer service skills, ability to multi-task, and a willingness to learn. Computer database and data entry skills are also required. Previous office and/or customer service experience is not required but is desired. Advancement to Event Office Assistant II is possible from this position. Event Office assistants may also transfer to one of the following: Accounting or STF Assistant.
Educational Media Collection (EMC) is a resource that provides educational materials in the form of films and videotapes to the University as well as other organizations around the country.
- EMC Assistants are responsible for scheduling check-out and viewings of materials in the EMC collection. EMC Assistants also prepare materials for shipping, inspect them upon return, and make necessary repairs. Advancement is possible within this unit.
Photography is a studio/production facility that provides University faculty and staff access to professional grade developing and printing services. This unit also specializes in reproducing prints from historical collections.
- Assistants generally come to this unit experienced in photographic processes and assist in the full range of services provided. Advancement is possible within this unit.
Student Technology Fee (STF) equipment checkout program is provided by funding from the technology fee paid by enrolled students. This program allows students to check-out audio/visual and computing equipment at no charge.
- STF Assistants are responsible for maintaining an online reservations system as well as facilitating equipment check-in/check-out. Requirements for this position include excellent customer service skills, ability to multi-task, basic computer skills, and a willingness to learn how to operate audio/visual equipment. Candidates must also be a registered UW student. Advancement to STF Coordinator is possible from this position.
