Transforming the Introductory Biology Courses

Department of Biology,
College of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Development Awards
(A competition jointly sponsored by the College and Tools for Transformation

The two large introductory biology series will be revised so that each series will better serve its student clientele. BIOL101/102 will be modified to meet the needs of students majoring in the applied environmental sciences (Forestry, Fisheries, Oceanography, and POE). Lecture and laboratory content will be designed to reflect a strong emphasis on population level and ecosystems biology with "real-world" applications. An advising lab will be developed in which students interact in small groups and with faculty and advisers to explore opportunities in the various applied environment science degree programs and careers.

A new series, BIOL180/200/220 will be introduced for students who will major in one of the bioscience degree programs (Biology, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Neurobiology, Bioengineering, and others), and for students interested in health sciences professions. Faculty from eight different academic units will be involved in designing and implementing a series that will have a strong interdisciplinary perspective. New inquiry-based labs will be incorporated to encourage students to learn science as a process, rather than just as a body of facts. There will be a strong effort to integrate student knowledge and skills within the series and between lower and upper division courses.

These changes will affect the biology education of undergraduates from over a dozen different degree programs at UW. It represents the first steps toward building biology curriculum that is stronger, more exciting and more relevant to students needs.
