Protecting Trafficking Victims
On Jan. 4, 2008, then-President George W. Bush signed the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2008 (TVPRA of 2008) into law. The Women’s Center applauds the reauthorization act by including more victim-centered language to increase survivors' protection of and prevent more victims.
The William Willberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2008 includes the following revisions:
- Mandatory "know your rights" interviews with consular officers for foreign domestic workers prior to entering the U.S.
- Contract requirements between diplomats and domestic workers that contain key employment terms and conditions
- New standards for how unaccompanied child trafficking victims will be treated in custody, and more services, including mental health services
- Greater protections for eligible family members of adult trafficking survivors
- Increased transparency in federal anti-trafficking grants
