From 'Making Connections' to Australia:
Interview with Tina Ty

Tina Ty
Working at the Women's Center helped Tina Ty find a career path.

“When I first came to the University of Washington 3-1/2 years ago, I was between two paths for careers: pharmacy and business. During a Making Connections workshop, we discussed a career in pharmacy when a speaker came and spoke to us. Afterward, I became more interested in international business. As for business, I was in Academy of Finance, a program for high school students. From there, I got an internship during the summer of my junior year in the Accounting Department. Since I had previous financial experience from a past internship, I was trained to help with the financial aspect of the Women’s Center’s Lifelong Learning program. Working at the Women’s Center helped me become aware that a career in business/ finance was what I wanted after my first year at the University of Washington. Now I know I want to focus on international finance in the long run.”

Tina Ty graduated from the Women’s Center’s Making Connections Program in 2004 and started attending the University of Washington the same year. Shortly after beginning her studies at the University of Washington, she began working at the Women’s Center as a program assistant, and then later as a financial assistant. Looking back, she recollects:

“The Women's Center helped me further my goals and understanding of finance by giving me more responsibilities in the financial aspect of the Women's Center. While working at the Women’s Center, I became more aware that this was what I wanted to do in the future. Also, each year, the Women’s Center hosts the Annual International Women Leaders Dinner and this helped me further understand all aspects of the countries that we host. This will help me when I work in the international field in the future.”

As a Making Connection Program graduate, Tina was happy to be involved with and watch the program evolve over the past 3.5 years. She is now in her last year and studying abroad in Australia. Thank you, Tina, for all of your hard work! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!
