UW Tacoma Honored for Transportation Efforts

UW Tacoma has earned a Governor’s Commute Smart award for its efforts to encourage staff, faculty and students to consider alternative modes of transportation. The State Agency Leadership Award honors UW Tacoma for reducing vehicle travel and making transportation issues a planning priority.

Under the leadership of transportation coordinator Jennifer Burley, the University in 2007 reduced the single-occupancy vehicle rate by 19 percent and vehicle miles traveled by 20 percent. In addition, the University has hosted a transportation forum, helped campus bicyclists access City of Tacoma resources, established a student commuter organization and organized a walking audit by one of the nation’s leading experts in walkability.
