Charles Shelan, MSW '78, Earns Nonprofit Leader of Year Award
Charles Shelan, executive director of Community Youth Services in Olympia, has been named Nonprofit Business Leader of the Year by the University of Washington Tacoma Milgard School of Business. Community Youth Services provides programs focusing on education, shelter, employment, family stability, foster care and simple survival. Originally a small drop-in center for kids—with a handful of employees and an annual budget of less than $100,000—Shelan’s organization has grown to a $6 million agency with 75 employes, serving 3,000 youth and families throughout Southwest Washington. Agnes Oswaha, MSW ‘09, Featured at Screening of 'Lost Boys' Film
The film God Grew Tired of Us follows the story of three young Sudanese men on their odyssey out of the brutal civil war raging in their homeland to a new strange world: America. Agnes has founded the Southern Sudanese Women’s Association, a nonprofit aimed at helping newly resettled Sudanese in Washington state adjust to life in the U.S. Agnes, along with friend Harriet Dumba, also launched Hearts of Angels for Health-Sudan Initiative, which focuses on empowering Sudanese women to overcome their traumatic pasts and develop skills in conflict resolution and health care. Agnes has also organized HIV/AIDS workshops locally and in Sudan. She now works with the Government of Southern Sudan Mission in Washington, D.C. More...
