Professor and Dean Emerita Nancy Hooyman
Professor and Dean Emerita Nancy Hooyman

In selecting endowed gerontology Professor and Dean Emerita Nancy Hooyman, the Council on Social Work Education honored an individual whose leadership in gerontological social work has been singular and formative. She is a renowned scholar, has served on virtually every major national social work board, and consistently lends her expertise to a wide range of associations, agencies and initiatives.

Her leadership and mentoring as an educator and scholar are further evidenced by her extraordinary academic contributions to the field. Alongside her myriad responsibilities, her scholarly productivity is enviable: she is the author of eight books and more than 100 chapters and articles related to gerontology and women's issues. In addition, many scholars agree that social workers are now more prepared to work with older adults because of Hooyman's strategy for educational transformation, a result of her work with the Hartford Geriatric Initiative.

It is impossible to adequately capture all the Hooyman has meant to the hundreds of social work educators, students and colleagues she has touched throughout her long and illustrious career. As a foremost leader in social work and aging, her contributions are profound and significant—some would say legendary. Congratulations, Nancy Hooyman, for your recognition as CSWE's 2009 Lifetime Achievement Honoree!

Hooyman received the award at the 2009 CSWE annual program meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
