Faculty Transition

Paula Diehr
Paula Diehr

Last fall Paula Diehr retired as professor of Biostatistics and Health Services. One of the School’s founding faculty, joining us in 1970, she brought statistical methods to health services research. She focused on a range of diverse issues but is generally interested in longitudinal analysis of health outcomes.

Paula started out in mathematics but, after learning about the field of biostatistics, received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in that discipline from UCLA’s School of Public Health, which has named her to its Alumni Hall of Fame. Her long service to the School included stints as acting associate dean and interim chair of Health Services in the mid '90s, and she received an Outstanding Teaching Award from our School.

Paula continues to be an active, publishing researcher—she was named a highly cited researcher by the Institute of Scientific Information in 2003—and was honored with a symposium featuring talks by colleagues and a dinner on Oct. 9. Listen to Paula describe her career in an interview videotaped for the School’s History Project.
