Professor Richard Ladner
Professor Richard Ladner

Professor Richard Ladner will present the 2010 Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Faculty Lecture on April 22 at Johnson Hall. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Ladner is on the faculty of the UW Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and in the Department of Linguistics. After many years of research in theoretical computer science he has turned his attention to accessibility technology research, especially technology for deaf, deaf-blind, hard-of hearing and blind people.

This annual lecture, named in honor of the late Dr. Kelly, recognizes his vision of equity in society and contributes to our knowledge of diversity and its dimensions: race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation and nationhood, disability, and age. All University of Washington faculty members are eligible to be nominated.

Dr. Kelly founded the Office of Minority Affairs in 1970 and served as its first vice president. He created a vision for how the University could and should meet its obligation to students regardless of color or economic status. He spearheaded new models of admissions, counseling and academic support that have since been emulated across the country.
