African Heritage Unity Celebration

The UW Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity participated in the fourth annual African Heritage Unity Celebration held at Seattle Central Community College, Feb. 6. The event was a celebration of African cultural heritage and allowed participants to share in community resources. Many different exhibitors, including representatives from OMA&D, were on hand to share information and services.

A special celebration opening included prayers, the singing of the black national and African national anthems, and a praise dance performance from Youth Explosion. Community members had a chance to visit with exhibitors, attend workshops and enjoy African-American and African cuisine from various countries including Ethiopia and Nigeria. Those in attendance were also treated to dance performances and African music. The UW Sorority Zetas gave a performance and assisted with the event as well.

Among the exhibitors offering resources were the Mary Jay Health and Education Alliance, Northwest African Museum, Public Health Seattle and King County, The Life Enrichment Bookstore, Alliance of People with Disabilities, the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Census Bureau.
