A '92 Grad in London Gets E-mails Flying in Seattle

Heather Brooke, ’92, might have been a little surprised to hear from fellow UW Communication alum Eric Nalder, ’68. After all, Brooke lives in London, and Nalder works out of Seattle. Nalder, however, had heard quite a bit about Brooke lately, as had a good portion of the UW Community. As Nalder reports in a May 21, 2009 seattlepi.com piece:

Her groundbreaking request for expense-account information from members of Parliament five years ago helped set the stage for Tuesday's resignation of the speaker of the House of Commons, an event not previously witnessed for 300 years.

That is the sort of news that makes one sit up and take notice.

Bon Kelly, assistant director for The Daily noticed a story in the Guardian and shared the news with Nalder, prompting the seattlepi.com story.

Graduate student and photojournalist Peg Achterman, ’82, heard the story on The World.

And Loren Skaggs, ’91, was one of the first alumni to alert us on Brooke’s investigative accomplishments when she forwarded the Guardian piece to University News with a story she found on BBC online:

Somewhere along the line, someone also read an AP story on Yahoo:

As it turns out, London is not so far away from Seattle and we are all very proud of Heather’s work and her affiliation with the University of Washington and especially with the Department of Communication.
